New Professor Joins DSA Program Fall 2021

Dr. Edward Mirielli joined the Data Science & Analytics program as Associate Teaching Professor in June 2021 and brings years of industry and academic experience.  Dr. Mirielli holds a Master’s degree in Sociology with emphasis in epidemiology/demography and a Ph.D. in Rural Sociology emphasizing applied statistics and the application of computing to the research process; both degrees are from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He has conducted many analytic, consulting, and development projects including traditional statistical analyses, and developed data products for multi-national corporations, national professional organizations, and small businesses alike. Combined with his education and practical experience this total background contributes a unique balance of theoretical and practical perspectives to the DSA program. See his profile here.

Ersoy Takes New Faculty Position

Dr. Ilker Ersoy took a new faculty position as Assistant Teaching Professor of Data Science and Analytics in June 2021. He has been teaching in DSA since the inception of the program. Dr. Ersoy has a Master’s degree in Computer Engineering from Istanbul Technical University and a Ph.D. degree in computer science from the University of Missouri. He was a postdoctoral fellow of pathology informatics in the School of Medicine and later in the Institute for Data Science and Informatics. His research focus has been computer vision, pattern recognition, and machine learning approaches in biomedical imaging and wide-area surveillance. He has developed multiple computational approaches towards quantification and analytics of biomedical and microscopy imaging data as well as aerial imagery working with a large network of collaborators from NIH, ARL, AFRL, and several private companies. Dr. Scott’s ML Webinar

In May 2021, Dr. Grant Scott presented a live virtual eLearning course “Enhancing Business Operations with Machine Learning.” Those participating learned about the business applications of machine learning, specifically related to decision making and automation.
